      The Netherlands are clearly visible on this September's day images with the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS). Seen north of the clouds and the islands of Zeeland is the port city of Rotterdam. The built up area to the north of this encompasses the cities of Den Haag with the residency of the Queen and the Government, Leiden and Haarlem.
      On the southwestern shoreline of the Waddenzee Ijsselmeer is the capital Amsterdam. Surrounding the city are the provinces of Flevoland and Noord Holland much of which lies below sea level.

      Across the border and into Germany, the cities of Cologne, Dusseldorf and Dortmund are also clearly visible.
