This post-fire normalised difference infrared index (NDII) image shows the aftermath of the Monte Calamita fire on Elba Island in 1998.
The blue line represents photo-interpretation of burn scar extent while the area in red represent single pixels or clusters of contiguous pixels identified as burned to a maximum five out of five level of confidence, while orange are pixels identified as burned to a four out of five level of confidence.
The trio of red circles indicate points recorded as ignition points in the Italian Forest Guards' cardset index or Area Incendio Boschivo, with indications of the their surface extension recorded beside them: the bottom left is equal to 15 hectares, the point above it 637 ha, the point up and to the right 206 ha.
Identification of core burned pixels takes place by multi-temporal and multi-threshold analysis of spectral indexes derived from Landsat TM/ETM images; burned areas shape refinement takes place with proven image processing techniques.
