Simulated seasonal sea-surface salinity maps. They exhibit only small variations, but demonstrate the uniform pattern of a saltier Atlantic compared to the Pacific. Since in-situ sampling is difficult, currently the only way of estimating global ocean salinity is to simulate the data using complex computer models.
