Ancient rock carvings at the UNESCO World Heritage site at Alta fjord in Northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle. There are more rock carvings in Alta than anywhere else in northern Europe, a total of about 3,000 individual figures. They depict people, animals, including reindeer, bears, elk, fish, birds, and boats and weapons. Red paint has been added to make them easier to see. The oldest of the carvings here date back 6200 years, and were continued for another 3000 years. For more details see the Norwegian Rock Art website.
