- Description
This armillary sphere, an early astronomical device representing the horizon, the Equator, meridians, polar circles and tropics, was built for the Hipparcos symposium held in Venice in 1997 and is now located in ESRIN, ESA's centre for Earth observation. In ancient times, the Greek astronomers used a similar instrument to measure the distances and positions of stars.
