Using data from ESA’s SMOS mission, the animation shows how the thickness of sea ice in the Laptev Sea changes between 10 November and 10 December 2011. As well as contributing to our understanding of changes in polar ice, it is envisaged that SMOS ice-thickness data will be useful for numerical weather prediction, ship routing and operational oceanography.
