    • Title Moon and Mars material testing
    • Released 01/10/2012 5:57 pm
    • Copyright ROSSINI
    • Description

Experimental setup for testing radiation shielding properties of simulated Moon and Mars materials. On the left hand side is lunar regolith, in the middle lunar concrete and on the right hand side Mars regolith. The beam travels from left to right. The thickness of material being tested is based on its 'Bragg peak' - its particular energy loss as ionising radiation travels through it. These tests for ESA's ROSSINI project were carried out at NASA’s Space Radiation Laboratory at Brookhaven in New York through its collaboration with German particle accelerator facility GSI.
