      Atmospheric carbon dioxide has been increasing steadily over the years. The map shows leaf area index (depicted in varying shades of green) and chlorophyll concentration. In photosynthesis, chlorophyll absorbs energy to transform carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen.
